IKEA DONATES ESSENTIAL LEARNING SUPPLIES TO HELP ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
My Possibilities uses supplies in classrooms and therapy sessions
PLANO, TX – May 19, 2021 – IKEA donated essential supplies to enhance classrooms and therapy sessions at My Possibilities (MP), which provides continuing education, vocational training and job placement for adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD) in North Texas. These supplies provide assistance with hand-eye coordination, dexterity, organization, and safety.
Throughout the pandemic, MP has re-evaluated and reassessed how to best provide services for HIPsters whether at home or on campus. MP refers to its clients as HIPsters, Hugely Important People. Donations like these are key to providing top-notch programming. IKEA donated supplies ranging from bead exercises and utility carts to mirrors and plexiglass dividers. The organization will use these materials to enhance therapy services and provide further organization for instructors and therapists in classrooms and meeting rooms.
Speech-Language Pathologist, Marissa Myatt, M.S., CCC/SLP, utilizes the PYSSLA beads and bead shape set in therapy sessions to support MP’s philosophy of interest-based learning, the process of harnessing a HIPster’s natural interests and desire to create to collaboratively work toward speech and language goals. Skills targeted can include working on following directions, for example: place one yellow bead and one green bead on the board; understanding location words such as top, bottom, left, right; and maintaining attention to tasks. Over time, these skills can help enhance HIPsters’ ability to focus and participate in a classroom or workplace environment.
“IKEA Frisco is excited to partner with My Possibilities to support their programming,” said Kristien Verbeke, Market Manager of IKEA Frisco. “IKEA strives to create a better everyday life for the many people in all that we do, and the work done by My Possibilities reflects this value and has a substantial impact on our community and beyond.”
“We’re grateful to IKEA for donating all of these supplies,” said Jeanine Alpert, Director of Clinical Services at My Possibilities. “Our therapists can use them to help meet the growing demand for therapeutic services from our HIPsters. It’s partners like IKEA that help MP make every day count for all of our HIPsters.”
