It’s HIP to be FIT: Caroline R.

    By Adrienne Mageors | MP in Motion Blog | 0 comment | 29 April, 2021 | 7

The impact on her life is practically immeasurable.

Caroline has been a participant in the MP in Motion program for several years now.  The impact on her life is practically immeasurable. Caroline has lost over 40 pounds and as a result, improved balance, and control of her body. Her strength and flexibility have also improved tremendously.  These improvements have directly resulted in Caroline’s confidence blossoming.  Here are a few specific examples:

Prior to MP in Motion, Caroline struggled to get in and out of a walk-in shower by stepping over a 4-inch threshold by herself.  I needed to hold her hand or she risked an ugly fall.  Today, she can get in and out of a regular bathtub quickly and all by herself!

Before participating in the program, it was difficult for her to get in and out of a swimming pool.  She required someone to hold her hand as well as support her body. Not today! Today she is completely independent. Her legs are stronger, her balance much better and her core more able to stabilize her during these movements.

Previously, we would hold Caroline’s hand when walking in public such as in a parking lot, a mall, through a restaurant or on the streets — she was very vulnerable to falls.  Today, there is no need for such support.  I can’t remember the last time Caroline fell when out for a walk or in the community.

Caroline previously had limited mobility in her limbs.  She was limber enough, she has low tone, but she didn’t have the balance or confidence to put her body in challenging positions.  Today, without even thinking, she throws her legs up into a criss-cross leg position even on a very narrow dining chair.  Such an amazing thing for us to witness given her history.

In addition to the physical improvements, we have also seen a greater willingness to participate and follow instructions.  It used to be so difficult for her to participate with the other students that she would “shut down” and hold a “sit in.”  Today, I certainly won’t say she is a perfect participant, but the improvement in this area is marked. She now has fun at workouts rather than reacting as if they are dreaded events.

Many thanks to Jessie and Olivia for their passion and endless support for HIPsters like Caroline.  God bless them both!
